Kolkata 22 Sept 2025: Stray Dog Dies Trying to Save Electrocuted Man Unknown to him
Translated from original Bengali Version
At Kolkata’s Netaji Nagar area, it rained heavily all night. Yet, in pursuit of his profession an old fruit seller had to step out onto the flooded streets of the city. The whole city was under water—wires torn loose in some places, unfinished electrical decoration wiring work for the upcoming festival in others. Riding his bicycle, the old man was electrocuted and died when his bicycle contacted a submerged live wire.
To save him, a street dog leapt onto him. The dog too was electrocuted and died. Two bodies floated together in the water on Kolkata’s streets.
These very street dogs—about whom complaints are endless, who were being driven out just days ago after the dog haters gained strength from the ongoing events at Delhi. He, who fights every day simply to survive—yes, that very “street dog” gave its life while trying to save a man in danger. But the cruel fate–neither survived in the end.
May the souls of the old man and his unknown but faithful companion in death rest in peace.
I know no one will remember them. Once the water recedes, in a couple of days, we’ll dive back into the joys of the festival. But a life sacrificed in the attempt to save another sets an example: not man for man, but a dog gave its life for a human.
Today, the streets are under water, and the roads are their home. Give them some shelter, give them food.
In times of danger, you’ll see—it’s not people, but they who will leap in without a thought for their own lives to save you.
