Active ingredients
Opthocare XT contains a dual-action formula with the following ingredients:

  • Dorzolamide Hydrochloride (2% w/v): A carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that reduces intraocular pressure by decreasing the production of aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye).
  • Timolol Maleate (0.5% w/v): A beta-blocker that also helps reduce intraocular pressure by decreasing fluid production.

Uses and benefits

  • Treats glaucoma: Effectively manages both primary and secondary glaucoma in pets.
  • Reduces intraocular pressure (IOP): The combination of active ingredients works synergistically to lower high eye pressure, which can cause pain and vision loss.
  • Prevents vision loss: By controlling IOP, the medication helps prevent optic nerve damage and retinal degeneration.
  • Relieves pain: Helps alleviate pain caused by glaucoma.

Dosage and administration

  • Follow the specific dosage and administration instructions provided by your veterinarian. The recommended amount and frequency of use will vary based on the pet's condition and the severity of the illness.
  • To apply, gently pull the pet's lower eyelid to create a pouch and administer the prescribed number of drops.
  • If using other eye medications, wait at least 10 minutes between applications. Apply eye drops before eye ointments.

Potential side effects

While Opthocare XT is generally considered safe, monitor your pet for any adverse reactions, and contact your vet if you observe any unusual symptoms.

  • Eye irritation: Some pets may experience mild eye irritation, redness, or a stinging sensation, which is typically temporary.
  • Allergic reactions: Although rare, severe reactions like swelling, itching, or difficulty breathing require immediate veterinary attention.
  • Systemic effects: Due to the timolol component, systemic side effects can occur, especially with long-term use. These may include a slower heart rate, low blood pressure, or respiratory issues.
  • Pre-existing conditions: If your pet has a history of diabetes or heart problems, the medication may mask some symptoms of low blood sugar, such as a rapid heartbeat. Closely monitor blood sugar in these pets.
